Disderi Robot 3

Week 37 - Disderi Robot 3 action sampler plastic toy camera purchased last year from ebay for $10 including shipping. The Disderi Robot 3 has 3 plastic lenses that look like the face of a robot, available in several color combinations. The aperture is f8, shutter speed 1/100th of a second, with each of the three lenses firing sequentially on shutter release. There is no battery required. The resulting photographs have three images per frame, a larger one on top with two smaller ones underneath. The viewfinder is simply a fold up plastic frame, which is really not very accurate, just point in the direction of your subject.

I loaded the Disderi Robot 3 with a recently expired roll of Fuji Superia 400 and shot a few photos around the house. I carried it in my bag all week, it's very light, and used the rest of the roll on a walk around Baltimore on my lunch break. Street photography looks pretty cool in the 3 frame photos, especially with urban landscape patterns. It does make a grinding mechanical noise when firing the shutter, so don't scare anyone when taking a photo! It really is just a fun little camera when you want to get some different photos from your usual routine.

I processed the film in a Film Photography Project C-41 kit, and scanned on Epson V500 Photo with spot dusting in Photoshop.

Week 36 - Lensless Camera Manufacturing Co. 4x5 Pinhole Camera, received at Christmas 2014 from my wife, Brenda. I have been weighing whether or not I wanted to delve into large format film photography for some time, I thought a 4x5 pinhole camera would be a good jumping off point. Some of the obstacles for me for large format film were the cost, reliable processing, and the ability to scan the negatives myself. I've pretty much been keeping to small and medium format cameras, because I could pick them up at flea markets, craigslist, and yard sales for a few dollars. I don't have a lot of extra money to spend on my hobby, and I really just enjoy the process of shooting photos and developing them myself.

When I first started using the 4x5 pinhole camera, I found a technique referred to as the "taco method" using a Paterson two reel film tank for developing 4 sheets of film. I successfully used this method for over 70 photos but when I saw the kickstarter for Timothy Gilbert's SP-445 developing tank, I thought this would be a great option for processing my 4x5's. My tank arrived a few weeks ago and I was eager to give it go. On labor day, I loaded up 4 of my film holders with Arista EDU 100 and took a quick trip to downtown Hanover to shoot photos of St. Matthews Church on Chestnut Street and then to the square to shoot photos of the cannon display there.

I have to confess, I'm a bit afraid of the dark and only use a changing bag to load my film in holders and developing tanks. I found that loading the SP-445 from the film holders in the changing bag was a bit cumbersome, but with more practice it will go more smoothly. I think that I might invest in a larger film changing tent, especially if I wind up shooting more 4x5 film. The tank only uses 16 oz of developer for 4 sheets of 4x5 film, which is awesome! I followed the tips from the kickstarter project videos for processing and the only issue, which is very minor, is that there was a small amount of leakage around the caps. It wasn't enough to be a problem, but perhaps the next time I use it, I will follow the tip of wetting the O-ring around the lid before closing it up.

The negatives came out well, I used a 1+1 solution of Kodak D-76 for 9 minutes. I previously had scanned my 4x5's in two passes on my Epson V500 Photo, then stitched them together in Photoshop. About six months ago, I bought an old Epson Perfection 2450 Photo flatbed scanner and hooked it up to an old iMac, creating a dedicated 4x5 film scanning station. The scanner cost $12 plus shipping from ebay and I bought the dead iMac from Craigslist for $35. I was able to fix the iMac and load an old version of Photoshop on it to use the scanner.

Week 35 - Polaroid 420 Automatic Land Camera received from my nephew in a junk box of cameras. I tested the camera with a 3 volt battery with some juice left in it and loaded it with my last pack of Fuji FP-100c peel-apart film.

Our family is going through a difficult time right now - my mother is terminally ill with breast cancer and recently went on hospice home care. On Sunday morning, Brenda and I took a little break and drove to Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore to spend an hour or so walking the grounds and gardens of this beautiful and peaceful city park. The Cylburn mansion was completed in 1868, with a Carriage House, which currently contains a nature museum. I shot the entire pack of instant film while we walked around the park, thinking that it would be nice to come here and sketch sometime. After leaving there, we drove back to Hanover and had a picnic lunch at Codorus State Park, near our home.

Most of the photos from the pack came out with accurate focusing, using the rangefinder on the camera. I thought the photos turned out nicely and am pleased that those will be my last Fuji FP-100c photos. Well, I may at some point purchase additional Fuji pack camera film, but for the foreseeable future, I will be shooting with Fuji instax mini and wide films. I also occasionally purchase impossible project films when there is a sale on expired packs and factory seconds.

Week 34 - Kodak Brownie Bull's Eye purchased from a seller on Craigslist for $10 sometime in the past year. When I met the seller he explained that it was his parents' camera that he had found in the closet, and he wondered what I would do with it. I explained that I liked to collect old cameras and try to use them if possible.

I had recently purchased a lot of expired 620 film from ebay and planned to use what I thought was an unopened box of expired Verichrome Pan for the Brownie Bull's Eye, but when I opened the box (which was not sealed) the film had already been exposed. This was actually quite exciting and I developed the film later that night - see additional blog post with the results. I went and grabbed another one of the expired rolls of 620 film, this time Kodacolor.

The Kodak Brownie Bull's Eye uses, of course, 620 roll film, but I have used respooled 120 Lomography 100 color film in it once before. It has a Kodak Twindar Lens that focuses from 4 feet to infinity with zones of scenes, groups, and close-ups. There are shutter speeds of instant and long exposure with an eye level viewfinder. I decided to go for a walk around Baltimore, near my office on my lunch break and proceeded to shoot the entire roll of 8 photos. After seeing the results developed in Kodak D-76, I've decided that for the rest of my photo project I will use fresh film when possible.

Week 33 - Olympus OM10 purchased from someone on Craigslist for $10. It came with a 70-205mm Vivitar Zoom lens, but I purchased a 50mm Olympus Zuiko f1.8 lens for it from ebay for $20 with free shipping. The camera came with 36 rolls of exposed color film that I plan to develop in the coming weeks (it could even take months). I'm not sure if the photos will turn out as the camera and film were in a storage shed for years.

The film for this week was expired Kodak Portra 160NC and the photos were shot around Baltimore, MD and Codorus State Park, Hanover, PA. My favorite photos are the sunrise over Lake Marburg and the field landscape with big puffy clouds.

I mixed a new batch of C-41 Chemicals for this roll, scanned with Epson V500 Photo and Spot Dusted and adjusted for levels in Photoshop. Adjusting for levels is simply scanning the film on automatic, opening the file in Photoshop and selecting the lightest and darkest points in the levels dialog box. This brings the colors into range with the least amount of manipulation of the file.

Things I draw in My Fauxdori While Waiting at Places

August 15, 2016

Last year I purchased a ZYLC leather pocket Traveler's Notebook from Amazon after comparing it to the Midori Passport. I had been researching the Midori Passport and watched a few YouTube videos to get more information about them when I found this version of the leather notebook having an embossed floral pattern on the front. I really liked the look of it and also that the elastic straps that hold the notebooks inside were in the center of the spine instead of the back of the notebook like the Midori. After looking at samples of the Midori on Instagram, I also found that anything other than a Midori was referred to as a "Fauxdori".

The ZYLC pocket notebook came with a couple of notebooks, but is also compatible with all Midori Passport notebooks and accessories. I ordered a Midori blank sketchbook and use that for light watercolor ink and wash sketches with a Uniball Micro Fine Point Pen and a homemade pocket mint tin of watercolors. I also found that the ScoutBooks brand fit inside very well and have used the blank journals prepared with a Gelli Printing plate to give the pages some texture and background color for my line art sketches and doodles. I use a Uniball Signo White pen, brush pen and a Uniball Vision pen on these.

I carry the notebook and pens with me always in my messenger bag or in my pocket if I'm not carrying the messenger bag. I use this to occupy my time while waiting at restaurants for dinner, doctor's appointments, car repairs, and even while at the ER with my mother in recent weeks while she waits to be treated. I feel this is more productive and creative than checking my phone for email and social media updates.

Kodak Brownie Special Six-16 - 52 Cameras, 52 Weeks

August 10, 2016
powerlines.jpg culps_hill_tower_view.jpg gettysburg_castle_monument.jpg kayaks.jpg view_from_little_round_top.jpg view_to_devils_den.jpg

Week 32 - Kodak Brownie Special Six-16 that's been sitting in my collection for years. I bought this box camera on an antiquing trip years ago because of it's unusual flat triangular shape. I had planned to respool a roll of expired Ilford FP4 onto a 616 spool, but I searched the interwebs first to see if there was another solution. I found a blogpost by Peter Lutz on the Brownie Camera Page about converting a 116/616 camera to shoot with 120 film. He described how you could make a new mask to get 16 photos from a roll of 120 film. I only used part of his tip, to use trimmed down wall anchors in the ends of a 120 roll of film to fit in the 116/616 spool area of the camera. It worked very well, I only should have calculated the image area better to compose my shots. The other miscalculation on my part was starting on frame 1, when I should have started on frame 3, then 6, 9, 12, and 15. My first photo was cut off but I still got 5 full frames, with an extra 1/2 frame.

Made in the USA around 1940, the camera is basically a point and shoot box camera, with a simple viewfinder. It has two focusing settings of 6-15 feet and beyond 15 feet, with a Time and Instant shutter speed. The body is made of metal with a leatherette coating. Mine was peeling away a bit, so I tacked it down with rubber cement.

Photos were made at Gettysburg, on and near the Little Round Top and Culp's Hill areas of the battlefield. The sky was filled with puffy white clouds, which I tried to capture in the photos. I did forget to set the focusing lever in the shots that I made, sometimes I get caught up in composing a photo and forget to make sure I'm doing everything correctly. Nonetheless, there are photos, they don't seem to be out of focus, though maybe a little fogged. Again this week, I had a terrible time getting the film on the Paterson reel, as it was very humid. The film was processed in Kodak D-76 for 9 1/2 minutes, 1+1 dilution. Negatives were scanned with Lomography Digitaliza 120, which I found is better for larger size images than the stock Epson V500 120 holder. Levels were adjusted in Photoshop to capture the full tonal range of the negative.

Generic Plastic Camera - 52 Cameras, 52 Weeks

Week 31 - Generic plastic camera purchased at Morningstar Flea Market Antique Mall for $10. The tag said "Argus 35mm Camera" on it and came in a bright yellow box with the words "Say Cheese" and "Storer Cable", whatever that means. It also came with a cheaply made pleather carrying case. I did an internet search but could come up with nothing on a plastic Argus 35mm camera, or anything using the other words on the box. I thought at best, it could be a generic Holga or Diana type of camera. It felt quite heavy, probably had a weight in the bottom of the camera.

On the front, the lens reads "Optical Color Lens, Auto Fix Focus 50mm Lens 1:6." It has a tripod socket on the bottom and a rewind release button. I used a roll of FPP EDU 400 Black and White film from the Film Photography Project, as my color chemicals were recently expired. Photos were shot on a morning walk around Hanover, PA and also around Baltimore, MD on my lunch break. I found that the lens was much wider than the viewfinder indicated, I could have gotten closer on some of my shots.

It was very humid on the day I was trying to wind the film onto a developing reel in the changing bag, which resulted in a first failed attempt where in frustration, I shoved the film into the tank to protect it from light. I cooled off a bit and went back in while in a cool air-conditioned room. As a result the film got a little banged up with a few scratches and creases. I don't think it detracts much from the low quality of the photos that I got from this camera, I was hoping for photos with a dreamy quality and a little vignetting. The film was developed in Caffenol and scanned on Epson V500 Photo.

Week 30 camera - Pentax Auto 110 purchased from Ebay. I originally purchased a body, 3 lenses and a flash, but the body and flash were not functional much to my disappointment. I thought I could still use the lenses on my mirrorless Pentax Q10 camera, but a couple of weeks later, I was able to pick up a working body for $9.00 with free shipping from ebay. I've been wanting to pick up this particular little 110 SLR camera since I first heard about it a few years ago, but the prices were more than I wanted to spend. I have a soft spot for Pentax cameras, as my very first SLR was a Pentax K1000 that I bought for my photography class in college over thirty years ago.

This camera is so small, and the interchangeable lenses are even smaller, its adorably cute. The three lenses that I have - 18mm, 24mm, and 50mm, easily fit in a pocket with the camera body. I mostly used the 24mm, which is the standard lens, while the 18mm is wide angle and the 50mm  closeup. The Auto 110 has an automatic shutter, but you still have to manually focus the f2.8 lenses (the only aperture). The first roll I put in was expired Kodak Gold, but unfortunately it was ruined by my expired C-41 chemicals while developing. I was greatly disappointed but luckily I had just gotten my order of Lomography Orca 110 BW film.

I packed a new fishing vest I just bought to use as a photographer's vest and headed out in my car. (it was unbearably hot and humid) I think the vest will be quite useful when I have just a couple of cameras and don't want to carry a bag - it held 3 small cameras, lenses, pocket watercolors, small sketchbook, snack, and water. Photos were shot around Baltimore County, Maryland and the Mary Ann Furnace Trail observation deck by Lake Marburg.

Processing was with Kodak D-76, 1+1 for 7 minutes using the new Yankee Clipper II tank that I just purchased (it was the only currently available tank system that I knew of that had a 110 film reel). Negatives were scanned using a 110 film adapter purchased from Negative Solutions on ebay that was made for Epson V500 Photo scanners.

We all know how I love to participate in daily artistic and photographic challenges, so I was all in when I saw postings of World Watercolor Month on social media sites from some of the artists I follow. The challenge is to try to paint something in watercolor or use watercolor in some way in your artwork, for each day of the month. The watercolor challenge was made to help support the Dreaming Zebra Foundation, that provides art supplies and opportunities to underprivileged children. I've taken this opportunity to practice my watercolor skills and try some new things with watercolor.

So far, I've missed one day of the challenge, simply too exhausted to paint after a frustrating evening trouble shooting a problem with a digital design situation. I've tried to use different techniques than my normal line and wash painting style, experimenting with different types of paper, watercolor paints, pencils, and markers. I even signed up for a class in painting clouds in watercolor that took place for one evening at the local arts council.

I watch a lot of instructional videos on Artists Network TV, YouTube and such, but I think I just need to actually paint more. I finally tried the Winsor and Newton Watercolor markers that I purchased last fall, and I have to say, I'm very impressed with these and definitely want to experiment with them. I also took this opportunity to start my bird journal in the very nice handmade watercolor book that I bought at Hobby Lobby last year. The handmade paper in the book is not really ideal for watercolor, but the texture is so interesting, it gives a different effect to the finished painting. We are in the last week of the challenge, but I'm confident I can complete it.
