Week 47 - Konica C35 AF that came in a box of free cameras that my stepfather obtained from a local newspaper listing. Modern Photography from April 1979, touts this as the "First Auto-Focus Still Camera," with a non-interchangeable 38mm f/2.8 Konica Hexanon, with apertures up to f/22, focusing to 3 1/2 ft. It has an electronically programmed shutter, with flash, powered by two AA batteries. Available film speed settings from 25-400. The magazine article lists the original price as $283. An in depth explanation of how the auto-focus feature works from the magazine article below-

“Adjacent to the viewfinder, on either side of the “Konica C35” nameplate, are the windows for the Honeywell patented Visitronic auto-focus System… the Visitronic autofocus Systems can be classified as a dual-image comparator linked to the lens by an electromechanical system. As you cock the shutter the lens moves completely forward to a ready position. When the shutter release is pressed, the lens begins to move backward, under spring tension, toward its infinity- focus position until it receives an electrical signal indicating proper focus. At this instant a claw engages a toothed rack affixed to the internal lens barrel, and the lens is automatically locked in proper focus position.”
— Modern Photography - April 1979

I loaded the camera with Fujicolor 200 film and carried it along for a visit to see my mother-in-law. We decided to go to Elizabethtown for the annual Christmas parade, though, my heart was not really in it with my mother's recent passing. I thought I would try to get a few snaps of my great-niece and nephews in the parade, but we were facing the sun, which I think hindered the auto-focusing and auto-exposure on the camera. The close-up shots that I took of Brenda and her mom came out much better, I may want to try this camera with some black and white film with the subjects closer to the lens.

The roll was processed with Film Photography Project C-41 Kit (which I'm hoping will finish out my project before needing replacement) and scanned with Epson V500 Photo.

Week 46 - Kodak Pazzazz 110 Camera that my stepfather found while going through his desk, which he then gifted to me (along with a few other lo-fi cameras). A web search for information on the Pazzazz indicated that it was manufactured in Mexico, but the model I have shows a "Made in U.S.A." stamp on the top. The camera came in two colors, rose and turquoise, and was a very simple 110 load, point, and shoot camera. There is an on-off switch for the flash, requiring two AA batteries.

I had not been shooting on the project for a couple of weeks as I was taking care of my mother in her battle with breast cancer and I was heartbroken when she passed two weeks ago. It's been hard to pick it up again, but I want to finish the project so that I can start the new year with hope for a less painful, loss-filled one than of 2016. My father passed in early spring, then our beloved family pet beagle, Cinnamon, two weeks later, and now my mother. Even though my parents have been divorced for many years, and I had been very distanced from my father, both of my parents had a significant, meaningful impact on my life.

My stepfather had been going through some things, and found a few cameras that he thought I might like, and this little pink (fushia?) camera was in the bunch. The name simply called out that I shoot with it, and I still had a fresh roll of Lomography Lobster Redscale 200 110 film to load it with. I had returned from work after being on family leave and wanted to get back into my routine of walking at lunch break and shooting photos of the city. I shot the entire roll of film on my lunch hour that day, but I admit, I wasn't very discriminating in my compositions.

As you can see in the resulting photos, this camera with this film requires lots of light, perhaps I should have saved a few shots to use with the flash on the camera. The film was processed with Film Photography Project C-41 kit and scanned with Epson V500 photo.

Akira TC-002 35mm Plastic Camera

Week 42 - Akira TC-002 plastic 35mm camera purchased at a yard sale for 50¢. This camera is not very sturdy, but it had holga-like settings on the plastic lens so I thought I would give it a try.

I used a roll of Film Photography Project FPP EDU200, which is black and white surveillance film made by FOMA. I was about a week behind on cameras in the project, so I pulled a double with this week's shooting. I wanted to get this done quickly so rather than walking around town as usual, I loaded up my heavy bag with about 5 cameras (not all of them were for the project) and hopped in my car for a drive. I drove around a part of town that I hadn't been to for photos for months. I don't know if people look upon me suspiciously as I hop out of my car with my cone head shaped stocking hat, snap a photo of something mundane and quickly get back in my car.

The Akira TC-002 was easy to shoot with although the film advance seemed to skip a little, which was evident on the resulting negatives, some of the photos overlapped slightly. The settings are cloudy, partly cloudy, sun, and super sunny, which correspond to f6, f8, f11 and f16. It has a focus-free plastic f5.6 50mm lens. I couldn't judge what I was seeing in the viewfinder as accurate, I tried to frame up the shots best as possible. Regardless, I thought the compositions of the some of the photos came out great, though the negatives are a bit grainy.

The recommended processing was with Kodak D-76, but I didn't have any mixed, so caffenol it was for the usual 9 minutes at room temp. Scanning was with Epson V500 Photo.

Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta 531A

Week 38 - Zeiss Ikon Super Ikonta 531A received as a gift from my sister-in-law. She gave it to me stating that her father had given it to her years ago, but she knew that I would get more joy out of owning it than she would. It's a very nice piece to add to my collection, but I was more excited that it was still in working condition and that I could put a few rolls through it. I've had the camera for several years and this week is not the first time that I have used it, but it really is a nice little camera so I took it off the shelf.

I loaded the Super Ikonta 531A with expired Kodak Portra 160NC (I know I said I wasn't going to use any more expired film for this project, but this batch of film has been tested). The camera has a Compur Rapid shutter with speeds of 1 to 500, a Carl Zeiss Tessar Jena f3.5 lens. The shutter release has a lock which will not allow a double exposure. There are 16 6x4.5mm frames on a roll of 120 size film. The shutter must be cocked before pressing the button and sometimes I forget to do that, thinking the camera is jammed. As best as I can determine from my web search, it is a prewar model made in the late 1930's.

My mother is under home hospice care, so I have been spending a lot time at her house, but this past weekend Brenda and I had a break for the day. It was a beautiful fall-feeling morning as we drove out to Gettsyburg and went on some of our favorite parts of the auto tour. I had to catch up on my camera project so I was shooting with this camera and the following week's camera, a Rollei Prego 90. Look for those photos later this week. I tried to capture some interesting landscape photos with a few cannons thrown in and of course, a couple of photos of the always lovely, Brenda. We happened upon a cannon firing demonstration by Confederate Reenactors and I was able to snap a photo of a Union Reenacting couple.

The roll was developed at home with the FPP C-41 Home Kit and scanned on Epson V500 Photo.

Kodak Brownie Special Six-16 - 52 Cameras, 52 Weeks

August 10, 2016

Week 32 - Kodak Brownie Special Six-16 that's been sitting in my collection for years. I bought this box camera on an antiquing trip years ago because of it's unusual flat triangular shape. I had planned to respool a roll of expired Ilford FP4 onto a 616 spool, but I searched the interwebs first to see if there was another solution. I found a blogpost by Peter Lutz on the Brownie Camera Page about converting a 116/616 camera to shoot with 120 film. He described how you could make a new mask to get 16 photos from a roll of 120 film. I only used part of his tip, to use trimmed down wall anchors in the ends of a 120 roll of film to fit in the 116/616 spool area of the camera. It worked very well, I only should have calculated the image area better to compose my shots. The other miscalculation on my part was starting on frame 1, when I should have started on frame 3, then 6, 9, 12, and 15. My first photo was cut off but I still got 5 full frames, with an extra 1/2 frame.

Made in the USA around 1940, the camera is basically a point and shoot box camera, with a simple viewfinder. It has two focusing settings of 6-15 feet and beyond 15 feet, with a Time and Instant shutter speed. The body is made of metal with a leatherette coating. Mine was peeling away a bit, so I tacked it down with rubber cement.

Photos were made at Gettysburg, on and near the Little Round Top and Culp's Hill areas of the battlefield. The sky was filled with puffy white clouds, which I tried to capture in the photos. I did forget to set the focusing lever in the shots that I made, sometimes I get caught up in composing a photo and forget to make sure I'm doing everything correctly. Nonetheless, there are photos, they don't seem to be out of focus, though maybe a little fogged. Again this week, I had a terrible time getting the film on the Paterson reel, as it was very humid. The film was processed in Kodak D-76 for 9 1/2 minutes, 1+1 dilution. Negatives were scanned with Lomography Digitaliza 120, which I found is better for larger size images than the stock Epson V500 120 holder. Levels were adjusted in Photoshop to capture the full tonal range of the negative.

Generic Plastic Camera - 52 Cameras, 52 Weeks

Week 31 - Generic plastic camera purchased at Morningstar Flea Market Antique Mall for $10. The tag said "Argus 35mm Camera" on it and came in a bright yellow box with the words "Say Cheese" and "Storer Cable", whatever that means. It also came with a cheaply made pleather carrying case. I did an internet search but could come up with nothing on a plastic Argus 35mm camera, or anything using the other words on the box. I thought at best, it could be a generic Holga or Diana type of camera. It felt quite heavy, probably had a weight in the bottom of the camera.

On the front, the lens reads "Optical Color Lens, Auto Fix Focus 50mm Lens 1:6." It has a tripod socket on the bottom and a rewind release button. I used a roll of FPP EDU 400 Black and White film from the Film Photography Project, as my color chemicals were recently expired. Photos were shot on a morning walk around Hanover, PA and also around Baltimore, MD on my lunch break. I found that the lens was much wider than the viewfinder indicated, I could have gotten closer on some of my shots.

It was very humid on the day I was trying to wind the film onto a developing reel in the changing bag, which resulted in a first failed attempt where in frustration, I shoved the film into the tank to protect it from light. I cooled off a bit and went back in while in a cool air-conditioned room. As a result the film got a little banged up with a few scratches and creases. I don't think it detracts much from the low quality of the photos that I got from this camera, I was hoping for photos with a dreamy quality and a little vignetting. The film was developed in Caffenol and scanned on Epson V500 Photo.

Week 27 - Imperial Delta 127 4x4 camera purchased in an antique store in Berlin, MD for $5. It had a roll of film in it, one of the reasons I bought it. I didn't have much hope of recovering any photos as I had opened the camera with the roll midway and I'm sure many others had done the same.

I had one roll of 127 film left, a July 1970 expired roll of Kodacolor X that had come in a box with another camera. Kodacolor X can no longer be processed as color film as the chemistry is no longer available, so I thought I would develop it in Kodak D-76. I had success recovering photos with D-76 on another roll of Kodacolor X from a different camera.

Brenda and I went on a Saturday morning drive last weekend to some of the places from my childhood. We drove down Falls Road with a stop at Graves Run M.E. church, a small country church that hasn't been active in my memory, but we walked by it daily on our route to and from the school bus stop. It has a small cemetery where we used to play (I know - we didn't have internet and video games then). It has an old outhouse in the back and doesn't have a parking lot as I think the last time the church had services was probably in the days of horse transportation.

After that stop, we continued on to Beckleysville and St. Abraham's where I attended church as a kid. My aunt and uncle lived in Beckleysville in what was once the local hotel, actually a smallish house that had a couple of bedrooms with a winding staircase. Beckleysville was a bustling paper mill town and quite populated in the late 1800's but was just a small intersection while I was growing up.

Brenda and I continued out to Beckleysville Bridge over the Prettyboy Reservoir where my dad used to take us fishing. We would sit on the bridge at night over the water and fish for crappies with the light of a Coleman lantern hanging close down to the surface of the water. The light seemed to draw the fish to our lines and we would have a feast of pan fried fish the next day for dinner. I find the waters of the Prettyboy Reservoir somewhat mysterious and a little creepy, I'm not sure of the reason, except maybe it's my fear of deeper waters. We continued our drive around to Prettyboy Dam further south of the Beckleysville Bridge. I was quite fascinated with the dam while I was growing up, again finding it somewhat mysterious, partly because of the stories surrounding the origin of the name. One story is that there was a farmer with a beautiful white colt named Prettyboy that was frightened by lightning and thunder from a sudden storm. The horse, seeking shelter along the banks of the Gunpowder, which forms the Prettyboy reservoir, slipped and perished in the Gunpowder stream.

We stopped by my old school, Fifth District Elementary, and snapped a photo there and then continued out Mt. Carmel Road to Hampstead, Maryland where we stopped at a farmers market to pick up fresh vegetables for the week.

I finished the roll of film with a few shots on a short walk around town and processed it in Kodak D-76 for ten minutes. I pulled out my bag of tricks and scanned the negatives as positive film and inverted them in Photoshop to recover the photographs shown here.

Argus Minca 28 - 52 Cameras, 52 Weeks

May 24, 2016
dolles_rehoboth.jpg berlin_md.jpg berlin_shoe_box.jpg front_porch.jpg organic_store.jpg rehoboth_avenue.jpg raynes_reef.jpg

Week 20 - Argus Minca 28, purchased at the Black Rose Antique Mall in Hanover, PA for $8.00. The Argus Minca 28 uses 828 film which is essentially roll film the same size as 35 mm film but with fewer frames on the roll and without sprockets. The roll I purchased online was pricey - $18, and was respooled Tri-X 400 with previously used backing paper and spool. I decided to purchase the roll with the intention of reusing the backing paper and spool in future experiments with 828 film. The Argus Minca 28 was produced 1947-48ish and was made under several other badges - the Delco 828 and Camro 28.

I brought the camera along on our vacation to Rehoboth Beach, DE and also took it on a trip to Berlin, MD. I missed the first photo on the roll, sometimes those number 1's are hard to distinguish from the arrow markings at the beginning of a roll of film. The film was very difficult to wind through the camera, I'm not sure if it was the design of the camera or something with the roll of film itself. I thought I might break the film but I finally got through the roll and finished taking it off the spool in a changing bag.

I developed the film in Caffenol, but perhaps I should mix up a new batch of D-76 for future black and white developing. Negatives were scanned with Epson V500 Photo.

Week 12 - Kodak Instamatic 500, the rolls royce of Instamatic cameras. A metal, solid camera made in Germany, with a button triggered pop out Schneider-Kreuznach f:2.8/38mm lens. A rangefinder camera with bulb to 500 shutter speeds with a built in light meter, though it was  suggested to use a light meter for correct exposure. Most Instamatic cameras feature only fixed focus and shutter speeds.

The Instamatic 500 uses 126 cartridge film with is no longer available, but if you have an empty 126 cartridge, you can refill it with the film of your choice. I watched a youtube video on how to refill the cartridge as well as looking at several websites with instructions. I chose to refill my cartridge with Kodak BW400CN, one of my favorite C-41 films, producing great black and white photographs that can be processed wherever C-41 is still done. In this case, in my kitchen with a Unicolor C-41 kit from Film Photography Project. I gathered my supplies for refilling the cartridge, sat down with my film changing bag and patiently followed the steps to get the film into the camera.

The instructions for shooting with the Instamatic 500 were to take a shot then advance two strokes of the film advance lever and a partial one to get the correct spacing of the frames. After developing the film, I think maybe I should have done just two strokes as there were large gaps between the frames. I think that you could get away with just taking a photo with each stroke as I accidentally shot two frames that way and they came out fine. One cool feature of the cartridge on the negatives is that there are sprockets on the top edge of the negatives. One video I saw, showed the bottom plastic removed from the film frame to produce sprockets on the bottom as well.

Even though a light meter was suggested, I shot sunny 16 and most of the photos came out properly exposed. For the most part, the photos turned out the way I had framed them in the viewfinder. Focusing is measured in feet on the front of the lens with zone focusing on the bottom of the lens as well. I was on vacation this week, so I was able to take a walk around Hanover on a sunny, warm Wednesday to complete the roll of film. The negatives were scanned on Epson V500 Photo and levels adjusted in Photoshop.
