Getting Back Into It

September 22, 2021

It’s been a while since I last posted, here’s what I’ve been up to lately. After going through a bit of a creative slump and artistic block during our move last year, I got back to the business of filling up sketchbooks and digital sketching. I tried a variety of drawing and painting activities and sketchbook filling ideas to get back on track. I took a summer landscape in-person drawing class this summer that got me into sketching and drawing nature with pen and ink. Specifically trees.

I find I’ve been spending more time working on a drawing than I did previously. I would like to get outside more to draw from life, but I’m still having a block in that area about where to go to sketch. Not to mention the terrible habit I’ve gotten into since the pandemic of not wanting to leave the house. But I do go out on occasion and snap reference photos for my drawings. My wife and I went to an antique steam engine show a couple of weeks ago but had to leave early, I had forgotten how hard it is to breath around the smoking coal-fired steam engines. I did manage to grab photos for reference for future drawings.

I’ve been out a few times over the summer with the local urban sketching group and my wife and I are planning a day trip out to the National Apple Harvest Festival coming up soon. I’ll be posting some of my sketchbook drawings in the coming weeks.

One Year/100 Paintings

January 10, 2019

One Year 100 Paintings - #101, Self Portrait. For this painting, I used Procreate on the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil and a self-portrait photo. I was going for a loose painting to capture the expression in the photo. I made a pencil sketch on a gray toned background and decided to leave the faint lines of the pencil sketch in the final painting. This was the last painting I worked on for the project and though my original plan of painting 100 acrylic paintings was not possible, I combined paintings of different mediums, digital and traditional to complete 100 paintings for the project in 2018. I am happy to say that I received a new Guerrilla Painter 5 x 7 pocket box for Christmas from my wife (it was on my wish list) and I’m excited to get out and try it in the field.

I have recently left my job of many years to pursue a new position and hope to work as a freelancer while doing so. I will be focused on starting a new career in 2019 but I want to continue to work on my creative pursuits in the process. My creative goals for this year are to paint more Plein Air paintings and continue to improve my digital painting and urban sketching skills. I also plan to use my new MiNT InstantKon RF70 to shoot more Instax Wide film and get to really know this camera. I will post samples of my photos after I’ve gotten a chance to try it out more.

What are your creative goals for 2019?

Kiipix Instax Mini Printer

October 18, 2018

Kiipix Instax Mini Printer, bought from Amazon for about $32 including shipping. I became aware of this through a post in the Worldwide Instax Shooters group on Facebook. This is a pretty neat gadget that prints photos from your smartphone onto Instax Mini film without using batteries. It folds up into a somewhat compact package that can be carried in a bag for on-the-go fun.

After opening the Kiipix, place the phone frame on your smartphone and resize and compose your photo on your phone in the opening. After composing your frame, place your smartphone with phone frame attached (it uses a removable adhesive) face down on the Kiipix stand. Press the shutter button on the Kiipix and wind the nob to eject the Instax Mini print. Multiple exposures are possible by pressing the shutter button multiple times before ejecting the film print.

It comes in several colors. I think it works really well and can be a budget-friendly option for printing Instax Mini photos from your phone. Holga is launching a similar product on Kickstarter with a companion app.

tintype effect on instax film

October 10, 2018

My process for making tintype effect on Instax film with iPhone apps and Fujifilm SQ10 Instax Square camera. The Tintype iPhone app converts regular iPhone photos to tintype images in either a square or rectangular format. There are various settings in the app for black and white, sepia, or color, with or without frame, eyes in portraits, depth of field and grain effect. The other app that can be used is the Hipstamatic app that uses a combination of the Tinto 1884 lens and D-Type film, but only saves in the square format. After the photos are saved to the iPhone camera roll, I transfer them to the micro-sd card for the SQ10 Instax Square camera using a lightning port micro-sd card reader. The photos can then be printed from the SQ10 Instax Square camera. I have sometimes used the sepia filter to get a warmer print. These could probably also be printed on a SP-3 Mobile Instax Printer, but I don’t own one of those to try it out.

I’ve also printed the tintype effect photos on the Kiipix Instax Mini printer using the rectangular shaped photos from the Tintype app. This works really well for antique cars, old machinery, or anything that would look good with a vintage photo treatment.

One Year/100 Paintings - Digital paintings showing my progress this year with painting on iPad Pro using Apple Pencil. In the beginning, I would place the photo left and sample colors from the photo to make the painting on the right. I'm now trying to bring up the photo in a separate window on the left and choose the colors from a palette in Procreate to try to give the painting a more unified color palette. The top image showing the photo on the left with the painting on the right in Procreate. The last two figure paintings are from live model drawing sessions.
