I have been wanting to participate in the worldwide sketchbook project created by the Brooklyn Art Library for some time, and finally in November I signed up to create a sketchbook. How it works is that you purchase a sketchbook from The Sketchbook Project with the option of having it digitized, and you fill it up when you receive it using one of the themes or with whatever you like, following the rules and size limitations.

After completing your sketchbook, you link it up to the library online and mail it back to be included in their permanent collection. If you have purchased the digitized option, your sketchbook will be scanned and made available online for others to view. The sketchbooks can be checked out and viewed in person at the Brooklyn Art Library or on one of their mobile sketchbook tours around the country.

Here are a few pages from my sketchbook entry with the theme "All about me". The fully digitized version can be viewed here.

Derwent Graphitint Tinted Graphite Pencils

Week 2 - Derwent Graphitint Tinted Graphite Pencils. I heard about these first on one of my YouTube watercolor channels and then more recently on The Art Supply Posse podcast. I found a good price for a new complete 24 pencil set on ebay.

The graphite pencils in this set are in assorted muted colors, that are perfect for nature drawings, landscapes, and portraits. I made a few wildlife drawings in my nature journal and a Gettysburg landscape, but I haven't experimented with drawing portraits (drawing portraits will be one of my projects this year)

I liked the way the finished drawings looked, with the texture of the graphite pencil strokes showing through the washes created after activating the graphite with water. I got the idea for drawing the Maryland Rockfish and the crappie from a YouTube video demonstration on how to use the pencils. My father fished for Rockfish on many Chesapeake Bay boat trips with his buddies while we were growing up. He also took us fishing for Crappies from the Beckleysville Bridge on many summer nights.

One of the things I want to create is a journal of bird drawings and paintings, so that prompted the drawing of the Bluebird. For the landscape drawing, I used one of my film photos from a day at Gettysburg last winter as reference material.

Next up in Create-A-Thon 2017 - Nicole Premieré Dual Tip Markers from A.C.Moore.

"Create-A-Thon" 2017 - A Year Long Creative Experiment

January 1, 2017

I've just completed my yearlong 2016 Film Camera project but I've been thinking about what I want to accomplish for 2017 for a couple of months now.

After years of being out of art school and with our children all grown, I've been sketching and creating projects with renewed artistic energy the past 2-3 years. The local newspaper took notice of my instagram postings and included me in a story early last year about artists carving out creative time while working full time jobs. I've been trying to squeeze in time to sketch and experiment with new art supplies or processes all year long while working on the the film camera project which brings me to my project idea for 2017 - a year long Create-A-Thon!

I will be trying out a new art material or process roughly on a weekly basis, depending on how much time I want to spend on each one, while blogging about my experiments and posting photos. My bipolar mind wants to try so many things and my studio is filled with no end of creative supplies that I've been buying like crazy with A.C. Moore and Hobby Lobby coupons. I have mounds of sketchbooks as I can't pass up a good looking sketchbook when we go to a new place to visit or I take my son shopping for art supplies for school (he's in the fine art painting program at MICA).

I still love film photography and will continue practicing it in the new year, but I would like to narrow it down to just a few of my favorite cameras, which currently happen to be ones using Fuji Instax Mini and Wide films. At some point during the year I will also try to get into my darkroom that I set up over a year ago.

Week 19 - Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom 80 purchased at the local Goodwill store for $4.99. I chose Kodak BW400CN from my dwindling stash, developed in Unicolor C-41 home kit. These photos were shot at Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, Mount Vernon, and Maytown, PA.

I really liked the size of the camera and I thought the photos came out really nice, since it's a compact point and shoot camera. There are options for shooting in different modes including an option for turning off the flash. I got nicely exposed no-flash photos from inside the MICA main building on a recent campus tour with my son. The camera is also weather resistant, making it nice to shoot in rainy conditions, like we had on our campus tour. I think it would make a great camera for walking around town or stashing in your backpack for a day hike.
